From Mainframe Needs YOU!:
The ReBoot Revival has been nominated for a PopVox Award! The PopVox Awards are put on by New Media BC and will be awarded at this year’s VIDFEST, another pretty cool event that all the Vancouver digi-dorks (like me) will be attending. Winning this will draw A LOT of attention to Rainmaker’s ReBoot efforts - and that’s good for all of us.
We need each of you to go through the following voting process. I know, I know - you’re bored of votes. But I’ve twisted ChiefZero’s rubber arm and managed to get you something in exchange - a super secret piece of unofficial ReBoot-comic concept art. It was created by the artist for the upcoming Hero High. We’ll be offering the piece as a downloadable, printable poster. After you vote, come back here on May 13th to get it. Trust me, it’s pretty wild - and it features Hexadecimal!
Okay, here’s how to vote:
- Register at PopVox.
- Click on the link in your email.
- You’ll get a login page. Click on the “Log in” button, as shown here:

Here is a “preview” of the ReBoot panel at this years New York Comic-Con. The rest of the panel will be up before the month is out (or at the very least before the second week of May).
In the meantime, please enjoy as ReBoot Co-Creator Gavin Blair and ReBoot co-writer (and current DC Senior Vice President) Dan DiDio talk* about our much beloved show!
*Just a quick note there is some profanity used during the video, if you object to this please contact me and I will send you a “censored” version.

From Several Updates…:
There’s lots of exciting updates to tell you about. First, however… some rumours:
1) I have heard that The Powers That Be are fairly keen to continue producing the comics WITH the intention of printing them in graphic novel form. No guarantee on this, however. I also hear that the overall comic length might be extended to even longer than I’d hoped. More updates on this in about two weeks…
2) The grapevine tells me that the first issue’s release date (online) might coincide with the New York Comic Con. This is great since it lets us begin advertising around a big comic event. Again, this is a totally unsubstantiated rumour. I’ll know more when MegaGertz gets back from his business trip in a few days.
3) I’ll be at Comic Con in NY from April 17-20! Are any of you guys going?! I propose a late-night ReBoot viewing at my (ridiculously posh) hotel room! I have every episode on DVD. Hilariously, I’m not going because of ReBoot but instead for a comic my company is making. But I’ll be at Gavin’s presentation and will be around for hobnobbing, etc. Comment below and we’ll make arrangements to meet up!
That’s all for now!

From Bad News / Good News:
Well, my pitch didn’t make it. Your new ReBoot movies will be written by some other sucker. Boo.
While I’m mildly disappointed, a working writer knows that rejections will come at a 10-1 ratio for a long time - at least until the first big break. I’m not too broken up about it. I’ve been working purely off my writing skills for 5 years, so it’s not like I’m going to delete myself or anything.
So before you ask - NO, I don’t yet know who the chosen writer is nor what his/her amazing, awesome, way-better-than-mine story is. Believe me, I will ask to read it at the first appropriate opportunity. Julie at Rainmaker informed me that it was “exactly what they were looking for.” Thanks for rubbing it in, J.
Some good news though… During my pitch, Rainmaker Animation VP Paul Gertz (who I’m officially naming MegaGertz), was musing about how we could continue to use comics to increase interest in ReBoot until the movies come out. I suggested an endlessly running webcomic, kinda like the ones I mentioned in my last post. That apparently stuck, as MegaGertz has asked me to meet with him later this month to discuss it. So maybe I pitched my way into a different writing gig anyway. We’ll see!
Alright, one last panel. I think this will be the last one you see until the comic comes out.
Let the speculation begin!

From ONE PAGE LEFT:
Well, the comic is only one page away from total completion. I’m just niggling over tiny details now. Next week, I’ll give you my final self-evaluation of the comic. Overall, I’m quite pleased.
In fact, I’m extremely pleased. It’s the beginning of a great story filled with mystery, travel, adventure, and stupid computer puns. How could you go wrong?
Only negative is - there’s not much more to say about it. I have a feeling you’re all getting tired of reading ABOUT the comic and just want to get to reading the comic itself. Well, you’ll just have to wait. The ball’s in Rainmaker’s court for the moment. So head over there and start making some calls.

Until then, here’s a panel from a page we’d decided not to show you. What is he holding???

From ReBoot Comic Writer Takes The Next Step:
ReBoot Comic Writer Jeffrey Campbell Pitching Movie Concept to Rainmaker Entertainment
This summer Rainmaker Entertainment decided that the ReBoot franchise was too good to let go of. Inspired by an online contest facilitated by Zeros 2 Heroes Media, Rainmaker let the fans decide on who would continue the story in comic book form. As many of you already know, Arrival (the winning team) is currently assembling the first issue of the ReBoot comic. Now that the comic is well underway, Rainmaker is listening to pitches for the first of three animated feature films, and who better to pitch a movie concept than the scribe behind the comic, Jeffrey Campbell.
Campbell doesn’t consider himself the ultimate ReBoot fanboy, but his intimate knowledge of Bob, Enzo, Dot and the gang says otherwise. “When I was a kid I really enjoyed the characters, the storylines and Mainframe as a whole. I always thought it was a cool concept and it looked really different than anything else out there,” says Campbell. “Then during the comic pitch I watched the entire series again and found that my fondness for the concept had grown with age.”
With the ReBoot movies in sight, Campbell is in a unique position to use his knowledge of how the franchise continues in comic form and apply it to the film. When the television series ended it left a lot of questions hanging in the balance, something the comic addresses. Campbell hopes to take this knowledge and use it in his pitch to win the opportunity to write the feature film.
“When the TV series ended it left a lot of people wondering not only what happens with the characters, but what happens with the world,” says Campbell. “The comic should resolve those loose ends. Should I get to write the movies, I intend to accomplish several things. I want to make better use of the story’s world, repair some of the problems that hampered the original series, and update the tone and storytelling style. Ideally, the films should also lay the groundwork for a new series.”
Rainmaker is hoping to put together a bit of a Star Wars or Matrix feel to the trilogy; meaning they are hoping to have a single stand-alone film followed by two episodic films. “ReBoot is just one of those franchises with so much untapped potential. We started something by having the fans choose the story for the comic. This time I’m excited to hear what each candidate has to say about how the story can continue,” says Executive Vice President of Rainmaker Entertainment Paul Gertz.
Campbell could be seen as a bit of a dark horse during his pitch, but he’s arming himself with the ReBoot comic and his honest love for the franchise. “On one hand I’m really excited to get to do this because ReBoot is one of those properties that I think was made for me. Ancient societies, powerful artifacts, a sci-fi feel with a Princess Bride tone: these are things that turn up again and again in my own stories,” he says. “On the other hand, it’s completely nerve-wracking because I feel like I’m expected to deliver the ultimate ReBoot story.”
The pressure is building for Campbell who is currently putting together his plan for the pitch. Although he’s had experience pitching films, this time he won’t be able to rely on the help of the Zeros 2 Heroes community. “Pitching the comic to the Zeros 2 Heroes community was great because I could pitch an idea and immediately see the fans’ responses. Pitching a film to producers, however, is a dicey business that involves more than just a five-star rating system,” Campbell says.

Vancouver voice actor, Garry Chalk, has recently been injured from a bad fall and will be out of action for quite a while. The injury occurred February 5th when he slipped on a patch of ice while walking his dogs.
The doctor has given him six weeks to be mended, and another six months to a year of physical therapy. You can read the full article about this incident involving the voice actor for Turbo and Slash here.
